Tis The Season

Since I screwed up my inaugural post here by forgetting to take pictures of the unbelievably tasty lunch I made yesterday (sausage! onions! ciabatta! grill!), I thought I’d, instead, make a pitch for helping out some others in need.

City Harvest, if you don’t know them, is a NYC-based group that takes food from people who have too much and gives it to people who don’t have enough. They call it “food rescue.”

I call it worthy.

This time of year, it’s especially important people have food on the table, and while economic times are hard, if you can all afford it, you could do a lot worse than throwing a few bucks over to City Harvest.

We recently began volunteering with them, helping out with food pickups at the Union Square Greenmarket. It’s a terrific thing to not only know that good food is going that night to people who need it, but also that there are enough generous farmers in the market to sustain this kind of project. At the end of the day, we must have loaded 60 or 70 bags of food onto the truck:

Tons of local, organic goodness going directly out to local food pantries. And they do this several nights a week, every week.

If you don’t have money, then you can also donate your time. And if you don’t live in NYC, there’s probably a group in your area that does a similar thing.

I’m sure our blog will be filled with lots of posts about us cooking and eating (and overeating!), but every once in a while, it’s good to remember that, for many, food is less about Top Chef, and more about just getting them through the night…
